Dear Book club members,

As you know we are reading the book "The giver" currently at the time. My last rj was based on chapters 1-3. This one is based on chapters 1-10. The character so far are Jonas,Asher,The Giver,The elders,Fiona,Lily, the new child aka Gabriel, and Jonas' parents. The setting isn't in poverty. The appears to be a piece of land. The place where they live isn't a democracy like how it is here. They live in a dictator ship by the elders. They have to go by a set of rules. If you break a rule you get kicked out which is mean. They have sets of groups by age to tell what you can do. At the age 12 they stop tract of your birthday and you have to go to city hall to find your birthday. I would recommend the book but I must warn you that the beginning is boring.

Sincerely,
Lucky

Title: Animal shelter's behavior experts face life and death decisions for animals
Author: John Owens
Source: The Miami Herald or Chicago Tribune
The topic of the article is animal shelter decisions
The main idea of the article is: An animal shelter in Chicago that is a anti-cruelty based shelter has to chose decision that regards to life and death situations to animals. It is stated.
The author’s purpose for writing this article is to tell the reader about what animal shelters do to check the animals behavior
The author’s perspective in this article is objective/subjective (not biased) because he does not show any form of opinions.
The pattern of organization of the article is in flashback, fact by fact, and a interview of the animal shelter.
The reason the author chose this pattern for the article is to focus on the main idea to talk about what is happening in the animal shelter.
The text features included in the article are: quotes from the interview of the animal shelter which helps the pattern of organization.
This article is about (a summary in your own words) what animal shelter behavior experts do. If the animal is not tame they would train it but if it isn't trainable they would put it down humanely.
The significance (importance) of this article is that some animals die due to behavior issues.
What I learned from this article is some animals are put down if they weren't trainable.
What I liked about this article is how they put a lot of information on what they do in the animal shelter.
What I did not like about it I don't like how they put down animals if they weren't trainable or tame I would just keep on trying.
Who should read this article and why people who would learn about animal shelters because some people would like to volunteer there. However it should be people not in the group PETA
This article reminds me of my mentally challenged bird who flew away. I chose that because he was hard to train.
(text-to-text) This really doesn't remind me anything related to this article in text form.
(text-to-world) This reminded me of the animals that were put down since the text and animal shelters that put down animals are related.
New vocabulary I learned
I did not learn any new words.

Dear book club members,

As you know we are reading the book "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. I would say the book is a meh book. The book started out with a plane that did not look like any other aircraft they seen. It was a fighter plane with a pilot using misguided directions. Everyone had to go inside for protection. The setting appears during poverty. As they use bicycles to move around for transportation.  I find the beginning a bit boring as it’s not like a juicy steak. However the way I'm reading is going by a fast rate. But then again I'm on the first few chapters so I really don't know the outcome of the book. To anyone else reading this, I don't know whether or not to recommend it since I'm only on the 5 chapter. I really don't know the characters since they barely say them. The only one I know is Asher they really don't tell anything about him.

Lucky

Dear people who like classic books,

I recently read this book called "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain. The book is really good, I chose the book because its an all time classic, I could't resist plus it was on my ereader. They are two types of "The Adventures of..." that are made by Mark Twain that I found on my ereader. The other one is "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." Judging the books by its covers I predict they look like someone else is telling there story at the same place. I found the Tom Sawyer one very interesting. Its time scenario would be around the 30's. Some parts when the characters were talking I really couldn't understand what they were saying from the slang. Like "I'm gonna lick you" or "My name is Tom that's how they lick me by." I find these the most weirdest things in a book. The main characters that in my opinion are the true main characters in the book are Tom the person who is telling the story, the narrator another person who is telling the story, Injun Joe a guy who is Tom's antagonist, they fight a lot, and his family. The book mainly focuses on Tom's adventures throughout his life. My favorite part is when they fight, Tom and Injun Joe fight (or Sid (a minor character) and Tom fight). I chose this because I love boxing (GO MANNY "PACMAN" PACQUIAO!). My least favorite part is when Sid throws a stone at Tom as he cowardly flees away. I chose that because Sid is a coward who wants to bring up more trouble. I would recommend this book to anyone, 5 out of 5 stars. If you want to play the video game of this book search it up on youtube or if you want to see a movie of it I advise to look at the older movies of this one not the cartoon version. Trust me this book had a video game and several movies made after it.

Sincerely,
Lucky

Dear Alexander,

I recently abandoned memoir "Lost in Shangri-la" by Mitchel Zurkoff. This time I actually read a lot from this book. I read up to 125 pages without skipping stuff. If you read my 1st rj you will see that I would recommend it, I still would but the book is too detailed that it makes the book boring to me in my own opinion. I'm not telling you to avoid the book I'm just neutral toward recommending it. The book focuses on a vacation during the war until bad things start to happen. Like the planes crashes with all the soldiers in them and then having to be a medic to support each other. I abandoned it for another reason is that the book got too long from being too heavily detailed to the death. I really couldn't keep count of the characters because they keep constantly adding up from the plane crashes which some survived. The date of time I would have to say is around the ending of WWII toward a little less than the middle of the Cold war as I see some signs of each. My least favorite part of the book is when they fool around with the rifles. Just to let other people know, a rifle is a gun. Some people would call it a "big gun" but that's not the write term since a shot gun is a"big gun" which is entirely different from it. I chose this part because the could get seriously injured from playing around with it. Either from the bayonet which a long mounted knife or accidentally pulling the trigger. I also chose this because in our workbook we had a thing about gun safety and gun laws. My favorite part would be when they help one another when the planes crashed by forging or scavenging for food, medial supplies, toilet paper, and water. I chose this because if someone is hurt or in need of help they helped. They started by helping the weakest or in a fragile state and let the strongest or "meh" ones help them. At least they are risking their lives to help a teammate. Overall your choice to get the book. I'm not telling you to be "Yes, get the book" or "No don't get the book" its your decision. My rating would be a 5 out of 10 since its a book what I would like to call "meh." (If you liked this, comment below and do the captcha to post comment)

Dear my fellow classmate,

I recently read this book called "Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul" by the following authors Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Patty Hansen, and Irene Dunlap. I actually think these aren't the authors, its the people who send the letters are the authors in my own opinion. These are like the ones Mrs.Klink read to us last year. The version of this book I read was the 101 stories changes, choices, and growing up for kids 9-13. There are many stories in here one that I like is this story. "Run With It." The main characters in this story are Susan and her mom, Brian, and Jeff and his parents. Susan is a Tomboy who was best friends with Brian and then later befriended Jeff. Brian is one of Susan's best friend with terrible hand writing who also be friends Jeff. Jeff is a boy who has leukemia, which the teacher (mentioned only once so she is minor) said he cant always be with everyone in school. Susan's mom and Jeff's parents are like the messengers who tell which is which is happening to Jeff and then pass it on. The story is about Jeff and who comes to the 4ᵗʰ grade and the teacher announces about him. Susan and Brian who learn about Jeff from the teacher immediately befriend him. They play along and act like nothing is wrong. Then later he got his treatments and the cancer went away, but then came back. This is where all the bad things start to happen. Jeff's parents tell Susan's mom that Jeff has to get a bone marrow treatment and go to California. So they were like ok were cool with that. So Jeff and his parent go there. Later then Susan goes to a Skating party and can't find Brian. So she went home to ask whats wrong. Her mom said and I quote "Jeff's mom called..." (that's what it says in the book) If you guessed right, yes Jeff Died. Sad right? It appears Brian already has heard the news about him (in my opinion). Everyone is sad about it and guess what they can't afford Jeff's expenses. So they (Brain and Susan) started a running (a race) to support him or other people with that type of cancer by calling many companies and such and raised over ten grand. So they donate the money to the Leukemia Society under his name. Later then the mention there was a cross country biking marathon. Susan wanted enter but people called her crazy while others said and I quote "You're alive, you're here-so run with it!" So there you go that's my favorite story in this memoir. Overall Its a decent book and I would recommend it to anyone. 5 out of 5 stars for it. Hope you enjoyed my rj!

Lucky

Title: A legacy of service: Three generations of Pines family have served in military

Author: Perry Stein
Source: The Miami Herald
The topic of the article is about a family's generation about the military.
The main idea of the article is: about the military through 3 generations of a local Pines family.
The author’s purpose for writing this article is to show about a family of veterans for veterans day
The author’s perspective in this article is objective because the author is not biased and just writes a story of a family of veterans.
The pattern of organization of the article is in chronological order.
The reason the author chose this pattern for the article because he wrote what happened to one person with a the year to follow it and did the same for others.
The text feature(s) included in the article are: The picture of the family with a sub article in it.
This article is about (a summary in your own words)
This is mostly about the 92 year old veteran. He has done many things and won many medals. He even survived a failed deactivation of a land mine. His family is proud of him.
The significance (importance) of this article is to salute your troops and thank the war veterans
What I learned from this article is to keep on going even if something tells you not to.
What I liked about this article
Is how the author wrote about the veterans (the family of 3 generations) and showed the life of them.
What I did not like about it
I didn't dislike anything in this article. The author wrote it well and was not biased like the last article.
Who should read this article and why
Anyone who has is a veteran or knows a veteran. I say this because this looks like it was written for Veterans day.
This article reminds me of (text-to-self) One of my dad's friend who was a navy veteran.
(text-to-text) This remind me of this book Platoon leader.
(text-to-world) The national troops and veterans who have fought for our country.

I didn't learn any thing new, I understood everything and knew what they were talking about,

Dear Samuel,

I recently abandoned this short story I found on the computer called "Call of Duty" by Desmond Kelly, I thought it would be highly similar to the famously known video game series Call of Duty that recently released a new guy in the series Modern Warfare 3. With the suspense, mindblowing experiences, and showing somethings of war. This short story is not what you will expect. It is similar to Call of Duty, but its highly boring. It takes place during WWI like the older ones ( Call of Duty classic,  Call of Duty 2, etc.) I do not recommend this short story. It doesn't have key plots similar to Call of Duty. This short story has several variations by different authors . Whatever you do avoid it at all cost! I only read a couple paragraphs of it until I put it down. The story even shouldn't even be named Call of Duty. This is the worst short story "evar." The author also made several spelling errors in this short story. It's also one of those what I like to call "sleep you to death books/stories" meaning you can fall asleep reading it. I can't even keep tract with the characters.  Surely wish I picked a better one.  This story doesn't even make me feel traveling vicariously to where WWI happened. Call of duty games make me feel like I'm in the person I'm controlling shoes (the Wii version actually does that since its made to control it to simulate  anything). Like I said before if you want a nap time story here's a story. I have nothing good to talk about to talk about this "thing"

Dear Person,

I finished reading "A Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys Super Mystery Hollywood Horror" by Carolyn Keene. Its a pretty decent book, plus it combines 3 famous mystery busters in one book. The book gets a little boring when they are discussing about their daily life like "Why did you not bring dinner?" or they discuss about their relation ships. Ever since the title is Hollywood Horrow it is exactly what you think if you understood it or read the book. The book is related to how John Lennon died due to a crazy stalker fan, but their are no deaths in this book. Their is two stories toward the book.  One is a deadly stalker is targeting a television star Marla Devereaux from the taping of the show Sunny-Side Up. Nancy drew takes in this part of the story. While in the studios the Hardy Boys eavesdrop to locate a person of the deadly special effects which could really harm someone. My favorite thing about the book is how they combine to great detectives in one book. The downside is that the book wasn't balanced out it was mostly about Nancy drew's case. I would recommend it if you would like to read it or you just want a good mystery book.

Title: Will Steve Jobs' final vendetta haunt Google?
Author: MICHAEL LIEDTKE
Source: The Miami Herald
The topic of the article is Steve Jobs death could hurt Google's mobile operating system, "Android" since he claims that "Google stole Apple's Ios system"
The main idea of the article is: Steve Jobs (and his death) vs. Google
                                          (implied/stated)
The author’s purpose for writing this article is to explain about Steve Jobs' troubles with other companies and other operating system platforms.
The author’s perspective in this article is objective/subjective (biased) because he sides on which one of the 2 is true.
The pattern of organization of the article is put in a small time period of Apple products and how the mobile industry is.
The reason the author chose this pattern for the article is because how he wants to show about Jobs' death and Google's mobile operating platform, Android.
The text features included in the article are: The title was used in the article. A picture of Steve holding an Ipod Nano 3rd generation with a mini article displayed next to it.
This article is about (a summary in your own words)
This article is about Steve Jobs' death could hurt Google's mobile platform, Android. Which many people use and how Google is dominating the mobile world. Plus Steve wants Google eliminated no matter what it takes.
The significance (importance) of this article is how this is related to Jobs' death and how this about the "Android vs. Ios" scenario.
What I learned from this article is that Steve Jobs is biased against Google and how he wants Google's mobile operating system gone.
What I liked about this article was how it was about Android and Apple which are to me in my opinion the best PMPs and computers.
What I did not like about it was how the author was on Steve's side about this "tech war" and how Jobs was like "I want Android gone and killed even if I have to start WWIII."
Who should read this article and why:
Engadget; because they are all in the "tech scene" and know  about the "Android vs. Ios" debate/war
Android developers; because they know Android and how it works. Plus I know that it was created in 2006 but only mobile platform developers had a prototype of Android.
Maybe "fanboys" of each side if they are biased against one side and another, but this could make them start raging about Google,Apple, and maybe RIM (BlackBerry) if a RIM "troll" comes in and say they are better which I disagree with RIM.
This article reminds me of
(text-to-self) Me getting my first ever Android device which was the Archos 32.
(text-to-text) The developing code for Android and Ios.
(text-to-world) The "fanboy" war against all mobile operating system platforms.

I did not learn any new vocabulary after reading this article.

Dear Whoever is reading this,

I recently reread "The Hardy Boys Case Files Dead on target". This is an awesome mystery book. Its mostly about Joe and Frank trying to get revenge on a terrorist, Al-Rousasa who is linked to "The Network" a terrorist group. When they park there car they needed to grab something. So Joe's girlfriend, Iola went to go get the stuff and she gets blown to bits by a car bomb that was meant for the Hardy Boys. This version of the Hardy Boys is different from others because they killed off a character. In the end of the book Al-Rousasa commits suicide after fighting the Hardy Boys. But, later in the Case File series he gets resurrected from the dead. That's quite odd who that happened. The terrorist didn't use a bomb to commit suicide but took a 3 story fall. His last quote was "Nobody takes an assassin alive" the book should of used that quote if he was a suicide bomber since it will fit better then jumping to your death. I recommend this book to anyone who likes The Hardy Boys series. The original or old ones are better than the newer ones. So that's it hope whoever you are enjoyed. Comment, fav, subscribe wait... This is not YouTube, but you can comment! Hope you liked it!

Dear Ethan,

I just read the book Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson. Ever since his recent death this is the more updated biography of him. We all know he made Apple not all of it Steve Wozniak also helped, but did you know it started in his parents garage? The first ever Apple computer was the Apple I. It was a diy kit sold to the consumer. Then the next ones in line were the Apple II which was extreamly successful, Apple III the flop, Macintosh, Quadra/Performa, Power Macintosh, its clones, and then the modern Mac. During his time he left apple Around the 90's. We all know Pixar right? Guess who made it successful? "Mr.Mac" he made pixar do 3d models not 3d movies like how you where glasses. Then he came back to Apple after Pixar Studios. He had a lot of cleaning up to do. Many clones were let in place because of the ceo that was there after Steve cam back. Now that Steve is gone don't you think that history will literally repeat itself? He made the world different and better. If he "Ipwned" cancer he would of made Apple be great and not let history repeat itself ( if it does happen). Think Different

Dear Alexander,

I finished reading the book "Extra Lives - Why Video Games Matter" by Tom Bissell. This book is a combinations of video games and about his life which is quite disturbing. In some chapters he throws in stuff about his life and then mostly talked about his life instead of games. His life is disturbing and makes me want to say "TMI TMI dude we don't need to know that!". Apparently the author is a junkie because most of the time he talks about how in life he did "stuff". Tom even admits he lives a disturbed life in the book. In the book Tom talks about how he has gone through many Xboxes. He took around about 10 pages to talk about how he moved gave away a Xbox and then move on to a new country. Tom even went all the way back and talked about his school life. He went on and talked about how he went to a strict Catholic school which he never named. In his school time he talked about how he played a game with his schoolmates who can make the best die hard fake death with imaginary weapons. Looks like he is watching too many die hard movies. He also listed his gamertag on Xbox live and his PSN name. Im pretty sure you wont bother with it since you don't have either or. He has been to many countries, I don't see why he has constantly moved around the world for no reason. He done many things to express feelings and about more than video games but about his life.
I wouldn't recommend it to you since he made the book disturbing, but to anyone else who wants to read about it go ahead knock yourself out see if it interest you. Well that's all I have to type so bye!

Dear Julio,

I finished reading the book "The Day It Snowed Tortillas" by Joe Hayes. The book is not what you might think. The book is about this lady who married a person that cuts wood for work. The woodcutter was well, I wouldn't say stupid but he doesn't know how to read and write. The wife thought well since he doesn't know how to that she sent the grown man to school. He didn't like it so he ran off to chuck wood. He came home with gold he found and told his wife to not tell anyone about because robbers might kill them. Later then they got robbed. Now the story's title starts to make sense. The robbers wanted the gold, so 2 used trickery and acted crazy to ________. I don't want to show a spoiler you will find out soon. I love this book and recommend it. Get the book if you like it. Well that's all folks!

Dear Julio,

I just abandoned my book "Grimm's Fairy Tales" by the Grimm brothers (Willhelm Grimm and Jacob Grimm). I abandoned my book because it was boring and the stories were long and boring. I used Mrs.Zrihen's reading tactics no help, skipped many pages no help, so I abandoned it. All the stories are boring and dreadful. It made some of my favorite stories boring. I was able to get up to page 126 but note I skipped pages. I don't recommend this book unless you like taking a nap, I read the book to a 3 year old he said and I quote "It boring". In Little Red Riding Hood they called her Red cap so no hood but a cap and they sometimes called her a he then a she so a he/she? I blame the author for poor German translation since this book is German. Some of these stories are not even actual Fairy tales some were just made up. Well heres the end of the rant. Hope you liked it‼

Dear Daniel,

I just read "Hoot" by Carl Hiaasen. I'm pretty sure you know what its about. The book is about baby owls that are about to be killed from the construction of a Mother Paula's Pancake House. The main characters in this book are Roy Eberhardt is a kid/pre-teen that came from Montana to Florida who finds it hard living here. Beatrice "The Bear" Leap is a tough soccer player who is the step-brother of Mullet Fingers and protects him from trouble he might get from messing up the constuction. Mullet Fingers is Beatrice's step-brother, he got his name well nickname by capturing a mullet with his bare hands. He also messes up the construction site of Mother Paula's Pancake House. Dana Matherson is what I like to call the big lump of coal since he is a bully thats mean to Roy. In the book he got stripped down and tied to a flag pole which is funny and humiliating. Officer David Delinko, Chuck Muckle, and Curly also are the main characters the 3 work to get the job done and make the place made. My favorite part in the book is when they save the little tiny owls from being killed since they are endangered. My hated part was when they try to destroy the land and run over the owls. Most of the Mullet Fingers does a prank Curly does something for it to stop. Each event literally showed a cause and effect. The book is really great I recommend it plus its made by a great author but be careful some of his novels are nc-17 rated. Thats all so bye!

Dear Samuel,

I just finished reading "Sunrise Over Fallujah" by Walter Dean Myers. Its a really interesting book. Its about the current war that ended but, it took place in 2003 but, its all fictional but believable. The main characters are Robin "Birdy" Perry, Marla, and Charles "Jonesy" Jones. The plot starts when Birdy is deployed and meets his fellow soldiers. He meets Marla and Jonesy, Marla is a cocky person that sometimes gets on Birdy's nerves, and Jonesy is an African American with a gigantic vocabulary who really doesn't want to be in war. Birdy is also an African American, who doesn't want to be in war but is also nervous about it and sees no purpose in it. In the middle of the book soldiers die and go in combat however, the last battle is the most important one. In the last battle a blind kid walks in the middle of war and Jonesy did the bravest thing, he ran in to save the kid but also got shot in the neck for this process, he later died  from his wounds with full military honors. The conflicts in this book are the war, and why did Birdy want to be in war. The resolution to one of them is when Jonesy dies saving a blind kid in the middle of the war made Birdy rethink why he came to the war and why he has to fulfill his purpose. The war was not fixed since the book took place in 2003. My favorite part was when Jonesy saved the blind kid because it reminded me of 9/11 how some people were saving one another. The part that hated the most was when Jonesy died it also reminded me of 9/11 how some people were saving each other but died in the process. My personal feelings are the book is really cool had a lot of action and suspense. I recommend you to get it because its like Call of duty but most parts in the book are more modernized, other than having this made-up chemical "Nova 6" which makes you die a slow painful death. That's all I can write hope you write back! Well bye!

Dear World,

I just read the book "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens. However, I'm jumping ship on it. Many of you know about this book because its famous and the book had a play based on it. The reason why I'm abandoning it because the book is hard to comprehend for the smart 6th grade brain. The books pages are really long, I was only able to get to page 19 after 2 weeks trying to break down its highly proper English. The way the book was written down had proper English which the British and old Englishmen used. The way it was written made me think about Wikipedia explaining about 2+2 in big hard to learn terms. The book was quite interesting, around page 12 (at least that's the page my ereader addressed) that's when we finally get some dialog. Since I only got up to page 19 trying to read the book it did not tell me anything about the characters it was not like '"insert words here" said Bob' it mostly called the characters madam for women or sir for men. The book should have used the style of dialog like I said above then it would make more sense. The plot had no action because I only got to page 19 it mostly had transporting of letters to one and another. Since it was about the French and the British in the French Revolution some fighting should be involved around those pages not taking 20 pages about letters. I really had no favorite part in this book or hated part so I'm neutral with this book. Its pretty long and old I would recommend it if your a reading addict but, if you just want a book to read and your around preteen to teen I wouldn't recommend it because its hard to understand an if you have a short attention you could get bored. My feeling to this book is get it if you like reading but if all else don't get it at least it came on my ereader for free. Instead of this book I would recommend Lost in Shangri-La by Mitchel Zuckoff.

                            Over and out,
